Study Visit
Hon’ble Minister and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Social Integration and Economic Empowerment, Government of the Republic of Mauritius Visit to India under AARDO’s Study Visit Programme

A high-level study visit led by Hon’ble. Mr. Prithvirajsing Roopun (MP), Honourable Minister of Social Integration and Economic Empowerment, Government of Mauritius to India was organized by AARDO during 19-26 September 2015 with an objective to gain general insight of Poverty Alleviation Policies and Programmes and study the institutional mechanism that has underpinned the remarkable socio-economic development strides made in India in its fight against poverty. He was accompanied BY the Permanent Secretary of his ministry, Mr. Boyramboli Bojrazsingh. This is one of the highest levels of study visit organized by AARDO in the recent years involving Hon. Minister and Permanent Secretary.

During the visit, they visited various centers of excellence in Delhi and Hyderabad, which include the Regional Office of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the Council for Social Development (CSD) in Delhi. In Hyderabad, delegates visited the National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD), TATA Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), the National Institute of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (NIMSME), Koyyala Gudem Village, Pochampally-(Interaction with Members of Self-Help Groups and Members of Village Panchayat and Handloom Wavers Cooperative Society); and DDU-GKY Skill Development Centre, Kompally, etc.

The delegation called on H.E. Shri. Chaudhary Birender Singh, Minister of Rural Development, Government of India on 21 September 2015, where a presentation and discussion session was held with the high level officials of the Ministry in the presence of Hon. Minister. The delegation also visited AARDO headquarters and had fruitful discussion with H.E. the Secretary General and Assistant Secretary General, AARDO.

The outcome of the study tour has enabled the delegates to learn from approaches, strategies and policies effectively addressing poverty alleviation, social inclusion and empowerment of the vulnerable groups which could be adapted for replication in the Mauritian context. The delegates have acquainted themselves with up-to-date strategies, techniques on poverty alleviation policies and programmes in India.
