ACTIVITIES

Many countries in the Afro-Asian region have made significant progress in achieving their economic development goals during the last 2-3 decades. Some of them achieved two digits economic growth and significantly reduced rural poverty. On the other side, there are still many developing countries attempting serious efforts to attain higher level of economic growth to reduce rural poverty, remove hunger and mal-nutrition. These countries are in need of technical/financial assistance to further strengthen their development programmes to achieve a higher growth.

AARDO supplements the efforts of the member countries and provides ample opportunities to the officials/experts of its member countries to jointly discuss their problems, learn from the experiences of other countries who have already made tremendous progress in the field of agriculture and rural development, to exchange views, ideas, information and develop understanding amongst themselves for collectively exploring opportunities for coordination of efforts towards promotion of rural and agriculture development. Thus, AARDO acts as a catalyst in the Afro-Asian region for developing participative cooperation among its member countries to promote socio-economic development in rural areas. With these objectives in view, AARDO formulates and implements its technical programmes on triennial basis. Here follows the technical programmes for triennium 2009-2011.

The work programme for the triennium 2009-2011 has been basically in continuation of the work programme of the previous triennium (2006-2008) and is guided by the New Delhi Declaration on “Rural Development : Afro-Asian Perspective”. It also includes some new programmes as proposed by the member countries, the Regional Offices as well as the Technical Programme Committee. The work programme focuses on poverty alleviation, women and youth empowerment, climatic changes and their impact on food security as well as on the livelihood of the rural community. The programme would also cover scarcity of water, marketing of rural products, environment and desertification, sustainable agricultural and rural development, micro-credit, micro and medium enterprises, gender issues, rural community participation and partnership, post-harvest technologies and agro-processing, management skills, livestock & fisheries, advanced technologies for tropical and sub-tropical fruit production, information technology, etc. In fact, the work programme to be implemented from January 2009 for the triennium 2009-2011 was earlier approved by the 16th General Session of the AARDO Conference held at New Delhi, India on 06-09 January 2009. The activities of the triennium, broadly classified into the following headings, are as follow :
