FUNCTIONS

 

As stated in the Constitution, the main functions of AARDO are :

  • to develop understanding among members for better appreciation of each others problems and to explore collectively, opportunities for coordination of efforts for promoting welfare and eradication of thirst, hunger, illiteracy, disease and poverty amongst rural people;

  • to assist the member countries in obtaining financial and technical assistance, for their rural development programmes, from the financial and specialised agencies like the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), the Asian Development Bank, the African Development Bank, Arab Development Bank, various organs of the United Nations, including specialised agencies and national agencies, whether governmental or non-governmental, in developed and developing countries;

  • to collaborate with the appropriate international and regional organisations, including UN agencies, as also the national bodies, governmental or non-governmental, both in the developed and developing countries, for the purpose of taking such action as may accelerate the pace of rural development in the member countries;

  • to assist in the formation and development of organisations of farmers and other rural people, as also in the establishment of healthy relationship between them and the governmental agencies responsible for agriculture and rural development;

  • to consider the possibilities of, and assisting in, if necessary, the disposal or exchange of surplus agricultural commodities among members and others;

  • to promote cooperative activities in various aspects of life of the rural communities;

  • to promote exchange of visits of farmers and experts from one country to another;

  • to organise international and regional meetings, seminars, conferences, exhibitions and fairs and produce literature and undertake publicity;

  • to initiate studies on subjects of specific or common interest and collect, analyse, interpret and disseminate data, statistics and information useful to members;

  • to lay the views of the Organization before any committee, commission or organisation - international or regional or national;

  • to raise funds by contributions and donations, and hold property, movable or immovable, in any member country or outside; and

  • to do all things incidental, and take all actions calculated to achieve the objectives of the Organization.
